Coronavirus kills NYC Correction Department official

A Department of Correction employee has died from the coronavirus — and the man’s grief-stricken brother said the family is reeling from the loss.

“He just passed away Sunday morning so we’re in the midst of a lot of stress, a lot of grief,” Raymond Perez said of his brother, David Perez — an investigator at the Correction Department who died Sunday.

“My brother was one of the best men on earth — very honorable,” the brother told the Daily News through tears. "He cared for his mother up until the last day he lived with her.”

Correction Commissioner Cynthia Brann confirmed on Monday that one of their own had succumbed to the coronavirus.

“Last night, a member of DOC staff who had tested positive for COVID-19 passed away at a local hospital. This person was an investigator and had limited contact with people in custody," she said.

“We are heartbroken and send our deepest condolences to our colleague’s family, loved ones, and co-workers,” the statement continued. "As we endure this loss to our community, we will continue to do everything to keep our facilities safe for everyone. Consistent with CDC and DOHMH guidance, anyone who was in close contact with this individual has been notified and appropriate precautions are taken.”

Perez, 56, who worked at the Investigation Division at department headquarters in Queens, died around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, sources said.

An internal memo went out to staffers on Sunday notifying them that the individual had tested positive for the coronavirus.
