Jay-Z hires legal help for 21 Savage
Jay-Z doesn’t like what’s happening to 21 Savage and he’s going to do something about it.
The rap mogul called the 26-year-old’s arrest by ICE agents an “absolute travesty” on Wednesday and hired a lawyer to help with his defense.
“The arrest and detention of 21 Savage is an absolute travesty, his U-visa petition has been pending for 4 years,” he said in a statement released by his company Roc Nation. “In addition to being a successful recording artist, 21 deserves to be reunited with his children immediately, #Free21Savage.”
Jay-Z’s label has also hired lawyer Alex Spiro to help with 21 Savage’s case, even though the rapper is not signed to Roc Nation, according to TMZ.
21 Savage was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Atlanta early Sunday morning. The agency alleges the emcee is a UK citizen who has been living in the country illegally since overstaying his visa as a child.
In the days since he was apprehended, the rapper’s lawyers have confirmed he was born in the UK and that he did overstay a visa, but as he was just a child his in-doubt status is due to something he had no control over.
US Rep. Hank Johnson, who knows 21 Savage through their work together on charitable projects in the Atlanta area, has also written in a letter support of the rapper.
“He spends his time giving back to the community and supporting and promoting the betterment of our youth,” he wrote. “He has been an outstanding figure and influence within his family and within Atlanta.”
