NFL’s Deandre Hopkins Donating Playoff Check to Jazmine Barnes’ Family

Houston Texan wide receiver Deandre Hopkins has said his paycheck for an upcoming NFL playoff game would go toward the funeral costs for Jazmine Barnes.

Hopkins announced the news on Twitter Thursday, saying that looking at a picture of Jazmine reminded him of his daughter.

“When I see Jazmine Barnes’ face, I see my own daughter. I’m pledging my playoff check this week to help her family with funeral costs and to support @shaunking @SherriffED_HCSO @SylvesterTurner in bringing this man to justice,” he tweeted.

“As I turned around and looked back at the street, I heard shots start firing and they came through my window, broke my glass, and hit me in my arm. They sped off in front of us and the truck slowed down and continued to fire as he was in front of us,” Jazmine’s mother, LaPorsha Washington, told ABC 13. “It was not fair. It was not fair. He intentionally killed my child for no reason. He didn’t even know her, he didn’t know who she was.”

Washington, who was with her four daughters at the time of the shooting, was injured. One of Jazmine’s sisters got injured, while two others were unharmed.

Activist Shaun King and Civil Rights attorney Lee Merritt are offering a $50,000 reward to anyone who has information on the suspect, who’s been described by police as a bearded White man in his 40s, driving a red pickup truck.

Hopkins said that he would dedicate Saturday’s game to honor the slain 7-year-old.

A GoFundMe Page was set up by Jazmine’s family to help with expenses.
